Music class is offered three times a week for grades K-6, 30 minutes per session. Grades 7 and 8 are offered music as a rotation class, 2 times weekly, approximately 50 minutes per class session. Each 7th and 8th grader receives a trimester of music instruction.
All Our Lady of the Lake School students will participate in liturgical and prayerful music at weekly Masses or prayer services. There are three prayer service choirs, made up of volunteers from grades 3 through 8. These groups are made up of children who wish to serve our school and the Church in a musical way. There are opportunities for these students to be song leaders and cantors, both as individuals, and at times, in small groups.
All our students participate in rehearsals during music classes and at the scheduled final Christmas program rehearsals. These occur during the last week of school, a week before the Christmas break. The children will then perform at our yearly Our Lady of the Lake Christmas program. This event is truly an awesome, outward sign of our Catholicity and belief in Jesus Christ at Our Lady of the Lake School.
Band is offered to students from grades 4 through 8. It is a ‘pay as you go’ program. This band is comprised of a few beginners and several more advanced players. I am the primary teacher of the band members, although at times I do invite my advanced players to lend a hand with the beginners, in a one on one, or small group setting. It is amazing how these young musicians come together by the Christmas program to make some great music together!
For serious singers in grades 3-8, I offer the OLL HONOR CHOIR, a ‘pay as you go’ group of singers and performers, who experience many genres of vocal music. This group performs what they have learned in various performing venues, both within the school community and beyond. The students in this group create ‘actions’ and ‘dances’ to some of the songs. This fun choir is made up of focused, very dedicated singers and perform
Every spring, I arrange an OLL BAND and OLL HONOR CHOIR all-day field trip. This event is comprised of touring and performing for other Catholic schools in Oregon, and for various other performance venues. Sometimes this springtime all-day OLL Band and OLL Honor Choir trip is comprised of other musical experiences, such as an all-day hands-on experience in an electronic music lab and recording studio. One year we took a tour bus to the Experience Music Museum in Seattle, with more hands-on opportunities. I continue to create this special day as a thank you and as a reward for their dedication and hard work.
We are blessed to have the newest, and what I believe to be the best music texts available. The series is called, “Making Music”, by Silver-Burdett. These new, colorful, exciting books come with wonderful sound tracks, informative lessons, and quality accompaniments. These CD’s have music tracks that are actually written in keys the children can comfortably sing in!
The students will also be playing percussion instruments and xylophones in class, singing a variety of songs, with an emphasis on songs and music of several, diverse cultures. I will be teaching the students several American patriotic songs. The music of the Broadway musicals will continue to be introduced throughout the school year, as well.
Grades 3 will begin, and grades 4-8 will continue their musical experience on recorders through a program called ‘Recorder Karate’. The students just love it!
So, there you have it . . . Another fun year of classroom music, Honor Choir, Mass Choir, and OLL Band at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School. I do look forward to sharing my love and knowledge of music with your children.
