FACULTY
Joan M. Codd Principal
Mrs. Codd has been the principal at Our Lady of the Lake School for the past fifteen years. She received her graduate degree from Idaho State University. Additional graduate work was completed at Gonzaga University, Washington State University, and Portland State University. Educational administration was the focus of her education, and Catholic education has been her focus professionally. She began her career as a dean in the Student Life Office at Gonzaga. Later, she moved to Portland with her family and took a position at St. Mary’s Academy where she directed their counseling center and taught in the religion department. Prior to OLL, she has been the principal at two other Catholic elementary schools in Portland. In 1992, she became principal at Our Lady of the Lake School. As a principal for the Archdiocese of Portland she sits on the Superintendent’s Advisory Team, chairs the Archdiocesan Curriculum Committee and serves on various NAAS/WCEA accreditation visiting teams.
Sheila Kleinheinz Vice Principal
Mrs. Sheila Kleinheinz is the Vice Principal for Student Life at Our Lady of the Lake School. Her duties include working with the students, including those with special needs, teachers, parents, and the school’s curriculum. Her educational career includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois and a Masters degree in Special Education (Learning Disabilities) from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and current enrollment as a doctoral student in the School of Education (Curriculum and Instruction) at Portland State University. Teaching experiences include the Naperville Public School District in Naperville, Illinois and the Wauwatosa Public School District in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Other interests include being a Certified Instructor of Trainers for the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, reading, traveling, knitting, quilting, and snowshoeing in the beautiful Northwest!
Diana Wiley Administrative Assistant
Diana Wiley is a native Oregonian, married and the mother of three daughters. She has been in Catholic Education for 25 years, fourteen of which have been as the secretary for Our Lady of the Lake school. Her office is often a flurry of activity and she enjoys her varied responsibilities. Her love for children and Catholic education keep her young, healthy and active.
Donna Griffith Kindergarten Teacher
Donna Griffith is one of a rare breed being a native Oregonian! She was born in Portland and has lived here all her life, except for a 4-year stint in Corvallis where she attended Oregon State University. Mrs. Griffith has been teaching for 13 years and is one of 10 children (Yes, 10!). Nine of her brothers and sisters live in Portland, as do her parents, so she has quite a large, local clan. She and her husband Tom have 3 children and a big, black lab! She loves being a mom, teaching, reading, walking and gardening.

Barbara Budd First Grade Teacher
Barbara Budd grew up on the East Coast and has lived on the West Coast for 19 years. She received her BS in Elementary Education from Rhode Island College and her M Ed in Literacy from Lesley University in Massachusetts. She has taught for over 20 years, the last six at Our Lady of the Lake School. She has taught in grades from Preschool to the sixth grade. She has been married for 34 years and has 3 grown daughters.
Carole Erickson
First Grade Aide
Mrs. Erickson has been at OLL for 27 years and in schools for 35 years. She received her certificate in education 30 years ago in Southern California. Carole Erickson loves to read and the Oregon Coast is her favorite place to go. She has two grown children Denise and Mark and three grand daughters, Brittany, Brooke and Cidney.
Barbara Eisner Second Grade Teacher
Barbara Eisner always dreamed of working with children. In college she began a nursing program, but quickly changed her mind and entered the education school at Pacific Lutheran University. In 1988 Mrs. Eisner graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and her Teaching Certificate. She decided to take a teaching job in Los Angeles at Laurel Hall Elementary School. It was a K-8 Lutheran School. Mrs. Eisner taught in many different areas while teaching at Laurel Hall. She taught 5th/6th grade, elementary PE, and 2nd grade. Coaching elementary girls and boys sports was another job. In 1996 Mrs. Eisner moved back home to Portland. Accepting a job at Our Lady of the Lake School was very exciting for Mrs. Eisner. She attended St. Thomas More as a child, so teaching at a Catholic School was like coming home again. Mrs. Eisner was married in 1999 and has two beautiful boys (4yrs and 1yr). She loves to run on the trails of Portland and can’t wait to begin spending more time with that sport.
Mary Riherd
Third Grade Teacher
Teaching is Mary Riherd’s passion. She graduated from the University of Iowa and began teaching before having her family of two daughters. She taught kindergarten and third grade in Cedar Rapids and Waterloo, Iowa, and fourth grade in Williamsburg, Virginia. She moved to Spokane, Washington, and taught sixth and then third grade at St. John Vianney School. After many years at home with her family, she returned to Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington where she obtained her Masters in Education. She was then hired for third, fifth, and sixth grade positions in the Mead school system. A move for her husband brought her to Portland, and her faith called her to again share her teaching profession in the Catholic school setting. Mrs. Riherd enjoys children of all ages and sees them as gifts from God. The creativity of children never surprises her.
Patti Ashworth Fourth Grade Teacher
Ann Vanderheiden Fifth Grade Teacher
Ann Vanderheiden was born in the Midwest but grew up on the southern Oregon Coast.
She attended Oregon State University (Go Beavs!) from 1988-1992 where she swam and majored in a bit of everything (gaining a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies). She took a break for a year and was a nanny in Greenwich, Connecticut. She returned to the Northwest for the Master of Arts and Teaching program at the University of Portland from 1993-1995. Again desiring a break, she packed her bags and jetted off to South Korea, where she taught English to four to seventy-five year olds for fifteen months. She journeyed overland on the Trans-Siberian railway on her return and decided it was about time for “a real job.” Ann taught fifth and sixth grade in St. Paul, Oregon for four years. She has loved teaching her fifth graders at Our Lady of the Lake School since 2001.
Denise Gonzalez Sixth Grade Teacher
Denise Gonzalez was born in Portland, Oregon and earned her degree in Early Childhood and Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education from Nova University located in Miami, Florida. She taught in Miami for six years. She relocated to Oregon and has been teaching here for ten years. She is the proud mother of two boys and the family enjoys Smores, their cat. Ms. Gonzalez loves the outdoors, sports, and family time.
Jim Willingham Sixth, Seventh, Eighth Grade Math/Science Teacher
James Willingham graduated from the University of Southern California where he studied Biology, Psychology, and Education. He earned his Master’s degree in 1989. Mr. Willingham has 28 years of teaching experience and has found that middle school students are his favorite group of students. He has taught Chemistry, Introductory Math, Biology, Advanced Biology, and General Science at various high schools. He has been at Our Lady of the Lake School for 9 years.
Sally Davidson-Parker Seventh, Eighth Grade Language Arts Teacher
Mrs. Sally Davidson-Parker received her B.A. in Humanities at Hawaii Loa College, and her M.A. in History at Northern Arizona University. After teaching in social services and at colleges throughout Oregon, Mrs. Davidson-Parker went back to school at Western Oregon University to earn her Oregon licensure. When not "cracking the whip" over past participles or the "whys" of history, she likes to keep her room open at lunch to get to know her students better.
Barbara Fisher Art Teacher
Barbara Fisher graduated from Long Beach State University with a major in art. She did graduate work in elementary education and has taught fifth through eighth grades. While raising her two children she spent five years as a La Leche League leader followed by ten years as a Lake Oswego School District Art Literacy School Coordinator and District Coordinator. She also volunteered at the Portland Art Museum, leading student tours. During this time Mrs. Fisher studied Discipline Based Art Education at Portland State University and Lewis and Clark College. When the Lake Oswego School District Community School began, she was invited to teach art classes, which she did for four years. She also served for five years on the City of Lake Oswego Arts Commission, including a year as the chair. In 1994, Mrs. Fisher began teaching art at Our Lady of the Lake School. She is also a certified yoga teacher and continues studying her two passions, art and yoga.
Jim Skurja Computer Teacher
Jim Skurja graduated from the University of Arizona in 1976 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education. He then pursued a brief career with the United States Forest Service. In 1980 - 1986 he was Program Director, Fitness Specialist and Executive Director of a YMCA. In 1987 Mr. Skurja completed his Master’s Degree Program at Northern Arizona University in Computer Curriculum. Taught computer education to 7/8 graders in Arizona for two years. He has worked for Our Lady of the Lake School since the spring of 1991. He has been married for 22 years to Katie and they have two boys. He enjoys hunting, fishing, hiking and biking in his spare time.
Donlan Jones Math Teacher
Donlan Jones, retired professional engineer, author, tutor and now teacher brings to Our Lady of the Lake a wealth of education and experience to our accelerated math program, with a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Santa Clara a Masters in Electrical Engineering from UCLA and The Degree of Professional Electrical Engineer from Stanford University.
Mr. Jones has taught in a variety of educational institutions including the University of Santa Clara, University of Portland and Clackamas Community College in Oregon. The students respect him and enjoy the immense overall wisdom he brings to the classroom.
Mr. Jones is a member of Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Society, and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Honor Society. He is also a member of Who’s Who Among American Teachers and has been recognized as one of the most respected since 2003. He has been with Our Lady of the Lake for 16 years.
Katie Johnson Spanish Teacher
Tim McCarthy Music Teacher
Tim McCarthy has his Bachelor’s and Masters degree in music education from the University of Portland. He has over 30 years of teaching experience from grades Kindergarten through 12th Grade. Besides teaching school music, choir, and band, Tim also plays several instruments and is an instrumentalist and lead vocalist in several bands in the Pacific Northwest. He is also a poet and short story writer for children of all ages. Mr. McCarthy is a composer of nearly 500 songs and other musical pieces. He is church music director at two other parishes in the Portland area, besides his role as school music teacher and Wednesday mass music director for Our Lady of the Lake School.
John Cimino Physical Education/Health
John Cimino received his Bachelor of Science and Masters in Exercise Science from Oregon State University. Mr. Cimino has 22 years of teaching experience in Physical Education, Junior High Science in St. Mary’s School in California. He brings with him 18 years coaching experience in football, baseball, and softball. Mr. Cimino has been with Our Lady of the Lake for 4 years now doing an excellent job with Physical Education classes for K – 8 as well as Health Classes for the Junior High. His hobbies include music and reading.
Shirley Hansen Resource Teacher
Shirley Hansen is a certified teacher from Australia who has lived in the U.S. for some years, after traveling in quite a number of countries over time. She has taught in Australia, and in England, as well as in the U.S., in Kindergarten through 8th grade as a classroom teacher. She made her home here after her American husband retired. Shirley’s extended family lives in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, all very far away. At Our Lady of the Lake School, she no longer teaches a class but really enjoys her work as the resource teacher to give support where it is needed. At any given time she has taught 25% of the families in the school.
Avril Allori Extended Care
Mrs. Allori was born and educated in England. She is the mother of six children and grandma to 5 soon to be six. She has been working for the Archdiocese of Portland for over 20 years, fifteen of which have been at Our lady of the Lake School. In her spare time she loves to travel, garden, boogy board, (yes that’s right!) and she administrates several of the USA national soccer teams, traveling with them when she gets the opportunity. She is sure that interacting with the students, parents, faculty and staff at Our Lady of the Lake school contributes to her feelings of well-being and peacefulness.
